What Faith Communities Can Do

  • Recognize that violence is occurring in congregational families in the same proportion as it is in the general population.
  • Learn about family violence.
  • Examine theological beliefs and attitudes that have been interpreted as giving permission for violence against women and children.
  • Explore the implications of religious customs and liturgical practices that contribute to a victim’s staying in abusive relationships.
  • Let people know the congregation is concerned about abuse in families.
  • Create an atmosphere of openness and support for people experiencing abuse.
  • Encourage members to become involved in community services such as DVIS that assist families in abusive relationships.
  • Become advocates for prevention.
  • Talk to DVIS about resources, including presentations and printed materials, available for faith based communities.
