Faith Based

Domestic violence creates a spiritual as well as a physical crisis. Faith organizations are in a unique position to identify and assist victims and to prevent abuse.

Recognizing that there is an opportunity for a powerful partnership between faith leaders and agencies providing assistance to victims of domestic violence, Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. (DVIS) has developed an outreach program. The goals of this initiative are to educate congregations about the basic dynamics of domestic violence, to enhance the ability of faith leaders to provide advocacy for victims, and to introduce steps that faith groups can take to address the problem of family violence.

Through presentations to large and small groups, workshops for faith leaders, informational materials, and crisis intervention assistance, DVIS can provide community awareness and education enabling congregations to provide spiritual support to their members who may be victims of abuse.

While religious beliefs may vary, they share a common teaching...nothing justifies abuse. Our faith communities have an especially important role to play in being an extension of God's presence for victims and their families. While creating awareness and providing support, faith groups can also be a force for the prevention of violence and can help to bring an end to its devastating cycle.
