Get Help

  • Report the rape or sexual assault to the police.   The sooner you tell the greater chance the rapist will be caught.
  • Call 9-1-1
    • The police will file a report on your behalf and help you through the process.
    • They will suggest you get a SANE exam.
      • If you agree, the Tulsa Police Department will call DVIS / Call Rape, Inc. and a SANE nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) will be called out to perform the exam, along with an advocate to support you through the process.
  • Get a rape examination within 72 hours after the rape or sexual assault:
    • To collect forensic evidence for prosecution.
To get tested for STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) or STI's (Sexually Transmitted Infections).
    • To see if you have any physical injuries which need to be dealt with.
    • At the sexual assault exam site, in a confidential room with trained staff and volunteers.
  • Preserve all evidence:
    • Do NOT: shower, bathe, change clothes, douche, brush teeth, drink or eat, or throw away any clothing until police or medical personnel say it is okay.
      • During the exam we will collect evidence such as your clothing, DNA swabs, etc.
      • If you have done any of the above, it is still possible to do an exam, but not as effective.  So if possible, please try to avoid any of these things.
    • If you have any physical evidence such as sheets, towels, or clothing that you have already changed out of, you will need to hand those over to the police officer for evidence.
  • Get counseling:
    • To help deal with the feelings of anger, helplessness, fear, and shame caused by the assault.
    • Even if you do not tell the police or get a SANE exam it is never too late to call for help.
      • Many individuals may feel symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) long after the assault happened, such as anxiety attacks, trouble sleeping, flashbacks, etc.  Others may be feeling self-destructive or suicidal.  Our trained counselor's can help you through these difficult situations.
  • Remember that it is not your fault:
    • Do not accept blame for being an innocent victim.
    • If you survived, you did what you were supposed to do.
    • Nobody asks to be attacked.
